The Constitutional Court will possibly be reformed after the parliamentary elections of this November, the Court’s president Alexandru Tanase said in the program “Fabrika” on Publika TV channel, being quoted by IPN.

According to Tanase, within the reform the number of judges will be increased and the right of judges to hold office for two consecutive terms will be annulled as only this way will they be independent and will take correct decisions.

Alexandru Tanase also said that in Moldova, as in all the European states, there will be instituted mechanisms to control the Constitutional Court. But the reforms will depend on the new government and its priorities.

In this connection, he noted that a study financed by the EU will be finished in the near future. It will help decide the changes that must be made to improve the work of the Constitutional Court.

In the same program, Alexandru Tanase said that the institution he heads has lately faced unprecedented pressure on the part of the political class, the adoption of the law whereby Parliament is allowed to dismiss the constitutional judges, which was later declared unconstitutional, is a relevant example.

However, Tanase sees positive things in this too. “When the Constitutional Court is criticized by the government, it means that the institution is not influenced by it and works normally. In its current composition, the Court ruled in favor of the opposition in over 50% of the challenges. This shows that the institution is independent from the government,” he stated.

Alexandru Tanase assured that by the November parliamentary elections, the Constitutional Court will examine no challenge and will pass no decision that can influence somehow the election outcome.
