The proposal to amend the Constitution by referendum will be drafted by experts and approved by the Constitutional Court before the spring-summer session of Parliament, the head of the Liberal-Democratic faction Valeriu Strelet has told Info-Prim Neo. “A commission of constitutional experts is now working on the proposal. The parliamentary commission for preparing the referendum will consist of jurists. We want to have a coordinated and consensual conception before the new parliamentary session,” said Valeriu Strelet. He also said that civil society will be obligatorily consulted about the constitutional amendment proposal before submitting it to the Constitutional Court for approval. As to the position of the Civic Coalition for Free and Fair Elections, which stated that the referendum results can have legal value only for a new Parliament, the Liberal-Democratic lawmaker said it is not right to make a link between the constitutional norm and the tenure of a legislative body. The Alliance for European Integration intends to hold a referendum to simplify the procedure for electing the head of state in April at the latest.
