Constitution must be respected, Valeriu Strelet

“The Liberal Democratic Party (PLDM) didn't have any expectations from today's decision of the Constitutional Court, because regardless of its verdict, we firmly adhere to the principle that the fundamental law must be respected, even if it's imperfect sometimes”, Valeriu Strelet, the leader of the PLDM parliamentary faction, told Info-Prim Neo. The parliamentarian stated that even if the Constitutional Court ruled otherwise, the formulation wouldn't have been “the Parliament is required”, but “the Parliament may consider this possibility”. “We can see that the Court remained firm on its position, namely that the Constitution is Moldova's fundamental law and it can not be overpowered by the provisions of an organic law. In the current conditions, and adhering to the our previous position, we will respect the Constitution. We realize that we need to identify solutions to overcome this constitutional impasse, to elect the president and move on. We didn’t count on an easy solution from the Constitutional Court and we understand that the Court had a difficult job to do”, stated Strelet. On Tuesday, September 20, the Constitutional Court passed an interpretation to Art. 78 of the Constitution whereby it ruled that the legislature cannot reduce, by means of an organic law, the majority requirement when electing the president. The Constitution provides for a three-fifths majority.
