The constitution meeting of the newly elected Parliament will be chaired, as in the previous legislature, by the eldest dean Eduard Smirnov. The Socialist MP turns 80 this September, IPN reports.
Under Article 63 of the Constitution, the first meeting to constitute Parliament is called by the President of the Republic of Moldova within 30 days of the election day.
At the first sitting, the president of the Constitutional Court presents a report on the results of the legislative elections and validation of the seats of the MPs-elect.
In the February 24 elections, the Party of Socialists won 35 seats of MP, the Democratic Party – 30, the electoral bloc NOW DA PAS – 26 and the Shor Party seven. The new legislative body will also include three independent MPs.
