Conservative Party says Moldova and Romania should sign Border Treaty and Basic Political Agreement as soon as possible

The Conservative Party (PC) of Moldova calls on the Moldovan government and the President of Romania Traian Basescu to sign the Border Treaty and the Basic Political Agreement between Moldova and Romania during the Romanian head of state's visit to Moldova. The party's president Natalia Nirca said Romania and Moldova are two independent and sovereign countries and should have such documents signed. The PC expressed its position on Traian Basescu's visit to Chisinau scheduled for the end of this month in a news conference held at Info-Prim Neo on January 21. Natalia Nirca said that a part of the Moldovan citizens were discriminated when the Convention on Small-Scale Border Traffic between Moldova and Romania was signed. “Only 1.5 million people will be able to enter Romania visa-free. What about the other 2 million people?” Nirca asked. According to her, the issuing of small-scale border permits will lead to corruption as many people would want to obtain residence visas in the settlements covered by the accord. “We expect that Traian Basescu will fulfill the promises to help Moldova that he made during the election campaign so that all the Moldovan people could move freely in the EU,” the leader of the Conservative Party said. In the same news conference, Natalia Nirca spoke about the present government's intention to modify the Constitution of Moldova. “We do not understand the position of the Alliance for European Integration – they are in favor of early elections or for amending the Constitution in order to avoid them. We think the Alliance does not have a common stance on this,” she said. Asked if the PC will take part in the possible early elections, Natlia Nirca said they will run in elections and are now negotiating cooperation possibilities with extra-parliamentary parties. She stressed they are in favor of an electoral bloc. “We held unofficial negotiations with the European Action Movement and other political projects that are to be launched. For sure we will not merge with a party that would destroy the PC,” Nirca said.
