It has been over three months of the mid-April snowfalls, but the consequences of these at the Botanical Garden in Chisinau haven’t been yet dealt with. The administration said many volunteers lent a hand and carried out important works, but a lot is yet to be done. The lack of money for restoring the destroyed gene pool is the main problem.
The April snowfalls destroyed over 80% of the decorative trees and bushes of the Botanical Garden’s exotic gene pool. According to the administration, the extent of the damage caused to exotic plants was assessed at several tens of thousands of euros. There were over 10,000 species of trees, plants and bushes on an area of more than 100 hectares.
Botanical Garden vice director Ion Rosca has told IPN that they don’t know how much time they still need to fully restore the area, including the collections and exhibitions, which were the worst hit.
Within the campaign “People help trees”, they managed to collect several thousand lei, but this sum is insufficient. A request to the Government to allocate 5 million lei from the reserve fund was made recently, but a response hasn’t come yet.
As to the support that was to be offered by the Prince Albert II of Monaco Foundation for rehabilitating the Botanical Garden, Ion Rosca said the application is being formulated and will be soon transmitted.
