The congress of deputies of the People’s Assembly of Gagauzia, which was scheduled for February 22, is a defence reaction and a method to show Chisinau that the Gagauz people and the region’s administration form a perfect union, said the executive director of the Association for Participatory Democracy ADEPT Igor Botan, quoted by IPN.
The political analyst said that by this union, they challenge the statements of the official Chisinau as regards the legality of the February 2 referendums. According to him, the scenario from the start of the 1990s, when similar congresses adopted decisions that led to the Moldovan-Gagauz split, will not repeat in 2014 as the context is different. “On the surface, the similar actions cannot have the same significance when the contexts are absolutely different,” stated Igor Botan.
The People’s Assembly of Gagauzia decided to hold a congress of deputies of all levels, including those who held seats at the beginning of the 1990s, on February 22. The congress is to approve the results of the referendums held in Gagauzia on February 2. The central authorities of Moldova consider the plebiscites were held illegally.
