Congratulatory message on 26 years of adoption of law on special status of Gagauzia

The senior administration transmitted a congratulatory message on the occasion of the 26th anniversary of the adoption of the law on the special legal status of Gagauzia. Prime Minister Ion Chicu said the adoption of the law that took effect on January 14, 1995 laid the basis for ensuring the political and economic stability, plenary and multilateral development, keeping and promotion of the national values and national identity of Gagauzia, maintaining of good relations between ethnic groups that have coexisted on this land during centuries, IPN reports

Ion Chicu noted that Gagauzia became an Autonomous Territorial Unit with a special status that, being a form of self-determination of the Gagauz people, is simultaneously an integral and inalienable part of the Republic of Moldova, which managed to become an example of peaceful solving of ethnic-political conflicts. Today the country’s region made the correct choice, namely to use the development opportunities by industrialization, development of social and economic infrastructure facilities.

Parliament Speaker Zinaida Grechanyi noted the adoption of the law on the special legal status of Gagauzia determined the stabilization of the relations between Chisinau and Comrat, the establishment of a productive dialog between the central power and the authority’s region. Today, the Autonomous Territorial Unit of Gagauzia develops at a fast pace, being a really positive example for the other regions of the Republic of Moldova. This is primarily due to the efficient management of affairs in the region that also led to the launch of appropriate international cooperation projects.

Incumbent President Igor Dodon congratulated the people of Gagauzia and reminded that last week Parliament adopted two laws on the Autonomous Territorial Unit of Gagauzia, which, according to the President, contribute to the harmonization of the local legislation with the provisions of the Constitution, the legislation of the Republic of Moldova and the law on the special legal status of 1994. Igor Dodon noted that he promulgated those laws that already took effect.

One of those laws provides that any amendment to the law on the special legal status of Gagauzia can be adopted by Parliament only after it is approved by the People’s Assembly of Gagauzia.
