Conflicts within GUAM member countries will be discussed at the UN General Assembly

The United Nations General Assembly (GA) decided to include in the work agenda of its 61st session an additional item concerning persistent conflicts within GUAM member countries and the effects of these conflicts on international peace, security and development. According to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and European Integration, this initiative, made by resident representatives of the GUAM member countries (Azerbaijan, Georgia, Republic Moldova and Ukraine), was rejected several times from the session’s agenda of the GA under pressure from the Russian Federation and its allies, which tried to keep this matters hidden from the international community, as these long term conflicts have an negative influence on Russia’s image in the UN. The permanent representatives of GUAM countries in the UN managed to get this issue on vote during the GA plenary meeting. After a discussion of more than three hours that affected the normal flow of the meeting, the United Nations supreme body agreed to include in the work schedule of the current session a new topic entitled “Long term conflicts from GUAM countries and the influence of these on the international peace, security and development”. The decision was adopted with a 1 vote difference. For the first time a vital issue for our country’s destiny was included in the General Assembly of the United Nations schedule. According to MFAEI, this decision creates a favorable background for the information of the international public opinion with GUAM region countries and opens new perspectives for their solving.
