The founders of the Church of Saint Martyrs Brincoveni in Codru town, Chisinau municipality, are upset that the Bessarabian Church didn’t intervene in settling the conflict emerged between the priest serving in the church and the churchgoers. Ilie Popa, one of the founders of the church, said that in 2003 it was proposed to build a church to pay tribute to all the martyrs in the Romanian space, all the deportees and veterans of the Nistru war. Two plots of land were purchased to build a chapel, an orthodox center and a hotel for the clergy. “In 2005 a chapel was built and the first liturgy was held on the Night of Resurrection by priest Esanu, who was recommended by the Bessarabian Church. We agreed because we knew that he was a descendant of a family of priests. It was strange when half a year later the priest changed his family name into Barbau. Then we found out that there was a conflict between him and his father before his arrival in Codru. The son (priest Esanu) had been plotting to remove his father from service at a parish in Calarasi. We asked the Bessarabian Church for a young and educated priest for the church in Codru and priest Esanu was appointed for the position, but we didn't know that conflict emerged would emerge soon” Ilie Popa said. Ilie Popa says that the money which was collected to build the church was spent and nobody knows on what. Soon the parishioners stopped visiting the church because of the offensive behavior of the priest. “The last straw was in 2011, when the priest organized a gang and attempted to remove the people from the parish so he can build a house within the territory of the church. We petitioned the Bessarabian Church, we asked for an audience, but when we visited the Church, His Highness passed by without giving any attention to our presence”, Ilie Popa added. The conflict has been ongoing for several years, but it re-emerged when the founders invited a different priest to serve in the church. The latter was beaten and casted out of the church, and the police had to intervene.
