The components of motor vehicles taken out of use will be collected, sorted and recycled. The Cabinet approved the legal framework needed for using old car components and stimulating circular economy.
Under the bill, the activities to treat and recycle vehicles taken out of use will take place in several stages, while the costs will be covered by producers and importers. Starting with January 1, 2025, the business entities need to ensure the reuse of 85% of the average weight of all the vehicles taken out of use, and 95% as from January 1, 2028, IPN reports.
“These measures will diminish the negative effects on the environment, will encourage the sorting of waste and will make the business entities from the field more responsible,” said Minister of Environment Iordanca-Rodica Iordanov.
The Environmental Agency’s data show that the cars older than ten have continuously increased in number since 2014. In 2014, 68.5% of all the vehicles were older than ten, while in 2018 the figure stood at 79.7%.
