Complicated skull surgery performed for first time in Moldova

For the first time in Moldova, surgeons at the Mother&Child Center performed an operation for craniosynostosis, a condition which affects the skull in infants. The 6 hour surgery was done on a 20-month-old boy by a joint team of Moldovan, German, Italian and Swiss professionals, Info-Prim Neo reports. “We owe the success of the operation to the advanced medical equipment. And of course the cooperation between our doctors and foreign specialists was very satisfying. Now we can say that pediatric surgery really makes progress”, academician Eva Gudumac told a news conference. Deputy Health Minister Gheorghe Turcanu said the operation was possible due to a project supported by the German Government. “Had this surgery been done with the old equipment, the consequences would have been different. The Moldovan health care system will further be able to use these pieces of equipment donated by the German Government”, said the deputy minister. Dr. Markus Schily of Germany described the surgery as “historic for Moldova”. “This boy has a future now. Many children wait for such operations and they will be performed at the highest possible level. This is a success for Moldova”.
