Competition watchdog director: Apa-Canal lies
Chisinau's water utility Apa-Canal (ACC) misinforms not only the City Council and the Mayor, but also the entire population of the city, stated Viorica Carare, the director of the National Agency for Competition Protection (NACP), at a press conference on Tuesday, Info-Prim Neo reports.
“People look for solutions when they want to achieve something. And when they do not, they look for reasons and excuses. I think this is what the ACC administration is trying to do now by presenting those false figures”, said Viorica Carare, referring to the ACC management's recent statements that it would cost the utility some 200 million lei to install water meters in every apartment, as NACP ordered, and that would imply a raise in water rates.
“This is not true. That figure includes the installation of water meters in every apartment in the city, but only 5-6% of them are still without meters”, argued Viorica Carare.
She added that Apa-Canal Chisinau faces another lawsuit for misinforming the public opinion. In 2008, NACP sued ACC and obliged it to present a public retraction.
ACC director Constantin Becciev on Monday told the municipality's meeting that if the utility were to abide by NACP's order and fund the installation of meters in every apartment, this would cost the company some 200 million lei and would force it to raise the water rate by 60%, from 9 to 15 lei per cu.m.
