Competition Protection Agency warns Sangerei gas supplier of violating competition law

The Competition Protection National Agency (CPNA) has considered a notification of consumers from the town of Sangerei as to what they describe as “inadequate behavior of the gas supplier from their locality, SangereiNordgaz”. Ion Echim, the deputy president of the CPNA has told Info-Prim Neo that the company insisted that the consumers buy only one type of gas meter. If they refused to buy that meter, they were warned they would have to incur all the expenses of maintaining and repairing the counter. Echim qualified such a request as a violation of the law, as the charges for natural gas contain the expenditures for the maintenance and reparation of the counters. “We have considered the notification and have found that the company, by impelling that condition, and being the only one gas distributor within the locality, brought about damages to the competition space, restricting the consumers' opportunities to choose. Now, about 70 types of counters are certified in Moldova. The counter required by the company was not the cheapest one, being 100 lei more expensive than the average,” he specified. Following the Agency's investigation, it issued a decision compelling SangereiNordgaz to curb the practice, to inform the consumers about all the types of certified counters. The Competition Protection Agency retains the right to sue the company, unless it puts up with the decision.
