Community service or arrest for insult and slander

The insult and slander will be punished with fine, community service or arrest after the new Code of Administrative Offences comes into force on May 31, Info-Prim Neo reports. The persons that will resort to public insults, saying or doing remarks or actions that damage somebody’s reputation and dignity are liable to fines from 400 to 1,200 lei or up to 60 hours of community service. The insult through mass media will be punished with fine from 1,000 to 2,000 lei or up to 60 hours of community service. For slander (the legal offence of making false spoken statements intended to damage the good opinion people have of somebody and accusing them of committing a serious offence), the individuals will be punished with fine from 1,600 to 2,400 lei or 20 to 60 hours of community service, or arrest of up to 15 days. For the same offence, the persons holding responsible positions will be fined from 2,400 to 5,000 lei and deprived of the right to hold certain posts or carry out certain activities for a period of three months to one year. Also, the persons holding responsible positions that will violate the legislation on the access to information and petitioning are liable to fine from 800 to 1,000 de lei, while those that will provide incorrect information at request will be fined from 900 to 1,100 lei. Under the new Code, the culprit can pay half of the fine if the fine is paid within 72 hours of the moment it is imposed. If the individual did not pay the fine during 30 days, the court can replace the penalty with double fine, community service or arrest or deprive the person of the right to carry out certain activities.
