Communists&Socialists to boycott Parliament meeting over arrest of Cahul district head

The Communists&Socialists group announced they are going to boycott Thursday’s Parliament meeting in protest at the “illegal actions” against Cahul district head Marcel Cenușă.

“As stated earlier, Marcel Cenușă was arrested with multiple legal violations. The charges were practically invented, without any evidence to back them. We’ve seen how the prosecutors acted and we’ve seen that no evidence, no arguments were put forward in the Cahul district court. We believe that today Mr. Marcel Cenușă is being held under house arrest in an absolutely illegal manner. We believe this is an assault and an attempt of a hostile takeover of Cahul district”, Socialist Vlad Batrîncea told a press conference.

On Thursday, Cenușă’s lawyers will ask the Cahul appeals court to release him and reverse his suspension from office. Meanwhile, according to Batrîncea, the Cahul city council will assemble also on Thursday in a bid to replace Cenușă with a “convenient” caretaker.

Cenușă, together with a mayor and seven businessmen, was arrested on charges of bribery and abuse of office. The group is suspected of embezzling over 1 million lei from the district coffers through procurement fraud.
