Communists’ ultimatum is one of their other actions of the kind, opinion

The Communist Party (PCRM) has resorted to the last legal means by which to prevent Moldova from following the path to the EU. Thus, the ultimatum for President Nicolae Timofti in two weeks to take a decision about holding a referendum on the signing of the Association Agreement with the EU is one of the actions launched after it was announced that the accord will be signed on June 27, considers Victor Juc, vice director of the Institute of Political and Juridical Research of the Academy of Sciences of Moldova.

Victor Juc has told IPN that the Communist Party had been passive over the past month and now decided to become again the focus of attention by taking a new action. This ultimatum is an action similar to those taken after it became known when the Association Agreement with the EU will be signed. “The Bashkan of Gagauzia Mihail Formuzal asked that the accord should be signed after the parliamentary elections in the hope that the configuration of power will then change,” stated the expert.

According to Victor Juc, the head of state is not obliged to initiate a referendum on the signing of the Association Agreement with the EU because this is not a subject that can be put to the vote.

The expert considers that the Communists’ ultimatum will remain without an answer. Moreover, after the PCRM does not get an answer, it may resort to two actions. It can picket the Presidential Office and seek the President’s resignation, threatening with mass protests. “We already know that their velvet revolutions ended with defeats. I don’t think they will manage to gather many people together to protest,” stated Victor Juc.

The second action is a new censure motion against the Government. But this motion, as the previous ones, will not be supported by the parliamentary majority because the current government coalition is determined to sign the Association Agreement.

The Communist parliamentary group sent a letter to President Nicolae Timofti, requesting that he should submit an initiative to hold a national referendum on the signing of the Association Agreement with the EU. According to the Communists, only a national plebiscite can decide the country’s fate.
