Communists to challenge constitutionality of June 28 decree
By issuing a presidential decree declaring June 28 to be the day of Soviet occupation and commemoration of the victims of communists, acting President Mihai Ghimpu has flagrantly abused the powers granted by the Constitution, stated Sergiu Sirbu, the Communists' legal representative, announcing he would file a request today with the Constitutional Court to check the decree in question for accordance with the Constitution.
Sirbu has told Info-Prim Neo the decree falls afoul of the country's sovereignty and integrity, of the provisions governing the unity of the people. According to Sirbu, article 6 of the decree, which demands the unconditional withdrawal of Russian troops, is beyond Ghimpu's authority, being rather the Parliament's prerogative.
The Communist Party hasn't decided whether to stage any protest on June 28. “But I can tell you for sure we will not participate in any commemorative event on this day”, said Sirbu.
