Communists reject AMN's proposal to set elections on March 22

The parliamentary majority rejected Thursday the proposal of Moldova Noastra Alliance (AMN) to insert a draft to set March 22, 2009, as the election day, into the order of the day of the session, Info-Prim Neo reports. AMN parliamentarian Ion Plesca, an author of the initiative, has asked to put the draft on the agenda of this last session, since the mandate of the present legislature expires on March 7, 2009, and the Electoral Code provides that the election day is established at least 60 days before the poll. Plesca says it's timely to set the date on March 22 also because the President's mandate expires on April 7. Democratic Party leader Dumitru Diacov expressed his confusions as to hiding the election date. “We do not understand the Governance. Also our foreign partners, ambassadors, international organizations, the civil society ask why the election day is not known. In other countries it is known years ahead, and it's not state secret,” Diacov said. The AMN's proposal to put the draft on the order of the day was not backed by the Communist MPs. Speaker of Parliament Marian Lupu assured the MPs the election date will be established within the terms envisaged under law. According to the law on electing the President, he is elected 45 days before the expiration of the mandate of the president in office. The same Parliament can elect the President of the country but once, except for dismissal/resignation or impossibility to carry out his/her duties.
