Communists deny vote rigging

The Communists Party (PCRM) is denying allegations of vote fixing made by the parliamentary opposition parties. Vladimir Turcan, the number three candidate on the PCRM's ticket in the July 29 polls, has told a news conference on Tuesday the opposition's allegations are unfounded and unproved, Info-Prim Neo reports. Turcan showed reporters a number of graphics which demonstrate, according to him, the real growth in the number voters in the period between the elections in 2005 and 2009. He argued that although more that 178,000 persons died in this period of four years, at the same time over 306,000 persons reached the age of 18, at which they are allowed to vote. “Those allegations are absurd and contrary to fact”, said Turcan, adding that all the cases of fraud claimed by the opposition had been verified, including by contacting all the persons who allegedly voted more than once or had no identification papers. Commenting on the claims by the opposition that their evidence had been ignored by the Constitutional Court, Turcan said that “it's not the responsibility of the Constitutional Court to hear their complaints and the opposition parties failed intentionally to respect the procedure of filing an appeal”. In another development, Turcan said that the suspicions concerning the involvement of Serbian nationals in the post-election violence had proved true. According to him, at least two Serbs who visited Moldova in the run-up to the April 5 elections are known to have been used by the secret services of certain countries to spark street riots. One of these persons, says Turcan, arrived in Moldova as a driver and entered in contact with certain NGOs and representatives of certain opposition parties. “When he needed his visa extended, this person used the influence of certain international organizations”, Turcan alleged. “We will bring our investigations to a successful end”, he added. Turcan went on to add that Romania's involvement in the April 7 events was demonstrated by “unionistic statements”, the participation of Romanian organizations, like the New Right, etc. A final decision on this matter is to be made by the court, he declared.
