Communists accuse Legal Commission head of conspiring against judges

Liberal MP Victor Popa, the head of the Parliament's Legal Commission, is accused by the Communist Party's lawyer Sergei Sirbu of secretly convening the Supreme Magistrates Council to instruct them which judges to support and which judges to dismiss. Victor Popa is denying the allegations as “blatant lies” invented by the Communists, Info-Prim Neo reports. “You summoned the Magistrates to give them instructions, Mr. Popa. Hands off of the judicial system! No more pressure! Not even in the Soviet era was something like this permitted. You didn't have any right to summon the Supreme Magistrates Council members without the Commission members knowing it”, declared Sergei Sirbu at the Commission's meeting on Wednesday. In retort, Victor Popa said the accusations were false. “There wasn't any meeting of the Magistrates convened. This is a blatant lie. Such statements are made on purpose during our meeting because they know that reporters are attending and they want to misinform people”. Earlier, Liberal leader Mihai Ghimpu said that a number of legislative proposals were prepared to dismiss Supreme Court chief Ion Muruianu for his alleged bias shown to the Communist Party.
