Communist Party remains on top, though support decreasing

{Correction: This version replaces second paragraph} If parliamentary elections were held next Sunday, the Communist Party would garner 29.5% of the vote, according to a recent poll by CBS-AXA. This is however a 2.1 percentage points drop from the previous poll which was published in July. Prime Minister Vlad Filat's Liberal-Democratic Party would poll 21%, a slight rise on the previous poll and a leap of 5 percentage points from March. Results for the Democratic Party and the Liberal Party didn't change much, standing now at 8.2% and 7.9%, respectively. 71% of respondents said they would cast votes if elections were held next Sunday. CBS-AXA director Ion Jigau remarked that the percentage of ardent supporters of the Communists dropped by 6 p.p. to 15%, while the number of Liberal-Democrat supporters rose 3 p.p. to 14%. Further, all political leaders saw drops in confidence levels, except for Lib-Dem leader Vlad Filat, whose support rose to 39%. Communist leader comes in second with 36%, followed by Chisinau Mayor and Liberal Party vice president Dorin Chirtoaca with 33%, Democrat leader Marian Lupu with 27%, and Mihai Ghimpu with 19%. President Nicolae Timofti enjoys confidence from only 15% of the respondents, as compared to 23% in July, and Ion Jigau attributes this to the fact that the President is aware of his role in a parliamentary republic and doesn't try to play the Soviet-style “father of the nation” role, which is what many Moldovans have expected him to do. The poll also shows that over 40% of respondents think that the current Parliament shouldn't be dissolved and there shouldn't be held early elections. The poll was conducted during September 19-27 on a sample of 1,225 people. The margin of error is 3%.
