Communist MPs oppose to celebrating Christmas in European style
The communist MPs opposed on Friday, June 29, to institute a day-off on December 25, when the Birth of Jesus Christ (Christmas) is celebrated according to the Gregorian calendar (new style).
A draft law proposed by three MPs suggested replacing the holiday on January 8 (the second day after Christmas according to the old-style calendar) by December 25. According to the draft’s authors, Christmas in Moldova is celebrated both according to the new and old calendar, so that the draft law aims at ensuring the right to rest to all the citizens.
By proposing this legislative initiative, the authors sought to align Moldova with the calendar of public holidays of the EU member states.
The communist MPs disagreed with the draft law and voted against.
