Communist MP says PCRM has not promoted anti-Romania policy

Doctor of History Victor Stepaniu, who is an MP on behalf of the Communists Party (PCRM), said that his party had not pursued an anti-Romania policy while it had been in power. He stressed that he detests the unionist movement as it does not recognize the Constitution, which says that “we are Moldovans and our state is Moldova”. During a program on Vocea Basarabiei radio station, Stepaniuc said that the old Moldova is our country and we must think about its past and its future. He stated that the most serious identity problems have been witnessed during the last 20 years. Until then, there were no problems concerning the identity of the native population. “The Romanianism, which is a political-ideologist movement, must be combated culturally, while the discussions must be intellectual, not political. We committed the same mistake,” Stepaniuc said. According to him, while in power the PCRM had not promoted an anti-Romania policy, but defended the 'statehood'. “Our party has shortcomings, but it is not true that we promoted anti-Romanianism. It is a normal reaction, when the party defends the statehood,” he said. Victor Stepaniuc considers that the people do not know the historical truth, while the Romanian authorities interpret the history as they like. “The present Moldova comes from the old Moldovan State, while Romania is the successor of this state. Since 1917, the population of the present Moldova have called themselves Moldovans. The Country's Council voted in favor of the union with Romania in 1918, while under the occupation of the Romanian troops,” the MP said. He admitted that there are a number of viewpoints on this issue, but he considers that his stance is the only correct one.
