Communist MP: I always considered that women must be promoted based on merits

The Party of Communists is the party that is best represented by women at the central and local levels, Communist MP Oxana Domenti said in the third Public Forum “Partnership for an Inclusive and Prosperous Moldova – Women Count!” held in Chisinau. She noted she always considered that the women must be promoted based on merits and less on particular quotas. However, the Communists will make common cause with the parties and civil society organizations that insist on the introduction of gender quotas, IPN reports.

“It was an event in which we listened to each other and got answers to our questions. We discussed the stigmatization that exists in society concerning the women’s role and the sexist statements. We will first of all promote a motivated, competent and active woman. By the own example, we will show activism and will submit useful projects,” stated the lawmaker.

According to Oxana Domenti, the women entrepreneurs spoke about the reconciliation of family life and professional life. The Communist MPs put forward a legislative initiative to motivate the women to have shorter maternity leave. “We suggest that the first year of the birth of the child should be best paid, by up to 75% of the incomes earned earlier. The next two years should be paid less so that the women want to return to work so as not to lose their abilities,” she said, noting that the Communists will propose initiatives to develop social services to motivate the women to return to work.

The lack of financing for social services is a common problem identified by the MPs in all the groups. All the women said there are good services that were piloted with the support of the external partners, but now these are not funded. The participating women underlined the necessity of adopting a law on social entrepreneurship. “We will make effort to have such a law passed by this yearned. We are now analyzing the best international models. We determined that the women meet with problems in the process of integrating into work after maternity leave and this social entrepreneurship is needed,” said Oxana Domenti, noting that there are good laws in many areas, but they do not work.

The MP said she will use the platform of the human rights commission and of the Communist parliamentary group to press the Government to enforce the laws.
