Common medal for Moldovan veterans of Red Army and Romanian Army
To mark the 65th anniversary of the victory in WWII, commonly named across the post-Soviet space the Great War for the Defense of the Motherland, and traditionally observed on May 9, the Moldovan authorities will decorate not only the veterans who fought in the Red Army, but also those who fought on the other side, in the Romanian Army. Moldova's caretaker president Mihai Ghimpu stated he would issue a decree to award the veterans of the two armies identical medals on this occasion, Info-Prim Neo reports.
Ghimpu made the announcement before Parliament after the lawmakers on Friday adopted the decision of the CIS heads of state to offer medals to the veterans who fought in the Soviet Army during 1941-1945. The decision, introduced at the CIS summit in Bishkek, recommends each member state to allocate money for stamping such medals.
Ghimpu argued it wasn't fair to decorate only the Moldovan soldiers who fought for the Soviets. “During the communist rule, those who fought in the Romanian Army were regarded as enemies. A soldier doesn't bear any blame, it is important that both categories are our citizens. And since this CIS agreement doesn't say anything about the other veterans, we shall decorate all, with a common medal”, declared Mihai Ghimpu from the platform of the Parliament.
