For the pro-European opposition parties, it would be suicide to accept the Democrats’ proposal concerning the support for the common candidate in the mayoral elections in Chisinau municipality. At the same time, this proposal formulated by the Democratic leader Vladimir Plahotniuc put Maia Sandu and her Party “Action and Solidarity” in a serious difficulty. The issue was developed in the talk show “Reply” on Prime TV channel, IPN reports.
Analyst Anatol Taranu said it would be suicide for the pro-European opposition parties to accept the Democrats’ support for a common candidate for the mayoralty in Chisinau. “The answer was evident and why did the Democratic Party formulate this proposal anyway then? The answer should be looked for in the goals pursued by the PDM,” he stated. According to him, supporting an independent, nonpolitical candidate who can attract the support of a large number of political forces, and in all probability such a candidate is acting mayor Silvia Radu, is a feasible solution for the Democrats.
Political coordinator Corneliu Ciurea said the Party “Action and Solidarity” and its leader Maia Sandu now face the biggest difficulties caused not by the Democrats’ proposal, but rather by the hurry in which the leader of the Party “Platform Dignity and Truth” Andrei Nastase fielded himself for mayoralty. “Now the PAS should take a rather difficult decision. Normally, the candidate of the PAS, eventually Maia Sandu, would have been a candidate with big chances of winning the mayoralty if she had been supported by everyone. The hazardous move made by Mister Nastase obliges her to reconsider the political behavior,” stated the analyst.
Sociologist Ian Lisnevschi noted that the PAS and PPPDA should first solve the cooperation problem and then consider the Democrats’ proposal. Any conflict between the pro-European parties of the right could generate the disappointment of a part of the pro-European voters in the candidate who would compete in the runoff. “This will enable the Socialists to win the mayoral elections in the municipality of Chisinau,” said Ian Lisnevschi.
Editorialist Petru Bogatu stated that the role of the PAS is rather significant in the current situation because the fielding of a common candidate of the right greatly depends on the position of this party.
