A commemorative plaque was unveiled on the building where painter Mihail Grecu lived, situated at 5/1 Matei Basarab St in Chisinau. The event forms part of the series of activities aimed at eternalizing the memory of Mihai Grecu. On April 9, it will be the 20th anniversary of the artist’s death, IPN reports.
In a press release, the Ministry of Education, Culture and Research said the commemorative plaque was designed by sculptors Victor Macovei and Ruslan Tihonciuc, who are members of the Union of Plastic Artists. These are authors of numerous public monuments. The costs associated with the making and placing of the plaque were covered by the municipality and the Ministry.
Mihai Grecu, together with Mihai Petric and Valentina Rusu-Ciobanu, founded the Bessarabian modernism in painting. Despite the pressure faced in time, Mihai Grecu remained faithful to the Romanian traditions in painting. The artist died in 1998.
