Commemoration services in memory of Lech Kaczynski and other Polish officials killed in plane crash

Religious ceremonies in memory of the victims of the Smolensk plane crash were held at churches of the Moldovan Metropolitan Church and the Bessarabian Church on April 13, Info-Prim Neo reports. According to the Government's press service, Prime Minister Vlad Filat took part in the service held at the God's Birth Cathedral together with the Polish Ambassador to Moldova, members of the Cabinet, diplomats working in Chisinau and ordinary people. The service was officiated by a group of priests headed by Bishop of Hancu Petru. He also attended the ceremony held by the Metropolitan Bishop of Bessarabia Petru. After the services, Vlad Filat offered his condolences to the Polish people. “In these difficult moments, we must be more tolerant and understanding, as the Bible teaches us, and offer each other support,” he said. The Premier thanked the Orthodox Church for organizing the services and supporting the Polish people. “Moldova has been constantly supported by Poland, whose President was a very energetic and spiritual man. Lech Kaczynski was an example for us as he taught us to help the people while we are alive,” Vlad Filat said. The Polish president, Lech Kaczynski, and his wife were among 96 people killed when their plane crashed in thick fog on its approach to a regional airport in Russia on April 10. Kaczynski was visiting Smolensk to commemorate the 70th anniversary of the Katyn massacre, which took place in forests outside the town.
