Columns of students from Kiev to march towards Independence Square

The protests staged in Kiev in support of the signing of the Association Agreement with the EU continue on November 28. One of the coordinators of the protests said a number of columns of students from all the universities of Kiev will mount a march to the Independence Square at 4pm, PN reports, quoting the website of the national news agency UKRinform.

According to UKRinform, former Ukrainian Premier Iulia Timoshenko will not abandon the hunger strike at least until November 29, when the EaP Summit ends in Vilnius.

The Ukrainian press reports that a new term for signing the Association Agreement between the EU and Ukraine may be set in Vilnius. Politologist Kosti Bondarenko was quoted as saying that the signing of a protocol that would set a new date for signing the Association Agreement would show Ukraine’s wish to make progress on the path to European integration.

Ukraine was to sign the Association Agreement with the EU at the Vilnius Eastern Partnership Summit on November 28-29. On November 21, the Cabinet of Ukraine announced that they decided to suspend the process of preparing for the signature and ordered the resumption of the dialogue with Russia and the other CIS member states. As a result, Ukraine was struck by a wave of mass protests.

In its last meeting, the Supreme Rada of Ukraine also was unable to vote the package of laws required for the association with the EU. The package includes the bill to allow the jailed persons to receive treatment abroad. This refers to Iulia Timoshenko as well. The bills weren’t backed by the Party of Regions, which has the largest number of seats, and by the Communists. The Ukrainian opposition supports the demonstrations in support of the European integration of Ukraine.
