CoE will continue to support Moldova in taking steps to join EU

The Council of Europe will continue to support Moldova in implementing the National Action Plan for accession to the European Union. The subject was discussed by Parliament Speaker Igor Grosu at a meeting with Council of Europe Deputy Secretary General Bjorn Berge, who is on a visit to Chisinau, IPN reports.

The Speaker noted that, over the years, the Council of Europe has supported Moldova in doing democratic reforms in the field of justice, the media and respect for the human rights. “We are fully committed to carrying out the initiated reforms and the justice sector reform is our priority. Even if we meet with resistance among judges, the process is irreversible and we will not give in,” said Igor Grosu.

The fight against fake news and propaganda was another topic raised. In this regard, the Moldovan official welcomed the Council of Europe’s expertise in strengthening media pluralism. “In the past three years, we have made considerable efforts to strengthen the state institutions, such as the Central Election Commission and the Audiovisual Council. Step by step, we will work to have strong institutions that can cope with criminal groups and external challenges,” stated the Speaker.

In connection with the 75th anniversary of the Council of Europe, Deputy Secretary-General Bjorn Berge today will participate in the handover of an important donation of medical equipment within the project “Strengthening the prison and probation reforms, provision of health care and treatment of patients in closed institutions”.
