Cobasna ammunition can only be disposed of with help from partners and OSCE, minister

The disposal of ammunition from Cobasna can only take place in a format, via the OSCE, which includes the international partners of the Republic of Moldova. The statement was made by the Minister of Foreign Affairs and European Integration, Nicu Popescu, at a press conference.

"The ammunition disposal process does not regard only Moldovan-Russian bilateral relations. It can only be done with the help of other international partners”, said Nicu Popescu.

At the end of August, the Russian Defense Minister Sergey Shoygu, during a visit to the Republic of Moldova, said that the Russian Federation proposes to initiate the liquidation process of the ammunition stored near the village of Cobasna, in the Transnistrian region of the Republic of Moldova, being ready to provide the necessary equipment for this purpose.

Political analyst Vladimir Socor believes that Russia can take advantage of the liquidation process of ammunition in order to bring additional military personnel and equipment to the Transnistrian region, under the pretext that these troops would work on the process. Asked if the Moldovan authorities take these concerns into account, Nicu Popescu said that the involvement of international partners in the process "will ensure that these concerns will not create any issues for the Republic of Moldova".
