Coalition with PCRM will not dilute pro-European message much, opinion

The discussions with the Party of Communists (PCRM) on the creation of a government coalition or on the obtaining of support for a minority government are a political action needed in case the Liberal Party (PL) refuses to form part of a coalition. Such an opinion was stated by the political analyst Corneliu Ciurea, who stated for IPN that the PCRM will not dilute much the pro-European message. Therefore, the Communists are welcome in a possible majority coalition or as partners in a minority coalition.

“However, there are evident risks as the voters of the pro-European partners do not fully support such a political move that ruins the classical model of interaction between the power and the opposition of Moldova and annihilates the classical political cleavage: the Democrats versus the Communists. This can cause the support for the pro-European coalition to decline further,” stated the analyst.

As to the advantages that the Communists can get from forming a coalition with the pro-European parties, Corneliu Ciurea said the PCRM already mentioned the posts it wants – the administration of the Audit Office, the Broadcasting Coordination Council, and of the Central Election Commission. “The post of head of state is in question. We will see if Voronin (the leader of the PCRM, e.n.) includes the post in the coalition agreement or renounces it. I don’t think the PCRM will have many demands as the party needs to come to power in order to attenuate the crisis it is facing,” he stated.

Asked how things had developed if the discussions between the parties that negotiate the formation of a government coalition would have been transparent, the analyst said the blockages would have been avoided, but the parties would have been dissatisfied, while the coalition would have been fragile.
