Coalition formation still uncertain and talks will endure, pundit

Political pundit Corneliu Ciurea says the situation with the formation of a coalition in the new legislature remains uncertain and that talks might have to go on for a while. Ciurea also thinks the negotiations would continue without the bloc NOW, because of its reluctance and despite being courted by both other parties.

“I have the impression that between the two parties that form the bloc more importance is now given to separation issues, how to create their (separate) parliamentary groups, and they are less interested by how to participate in the government. Unsurprisingly enough, the bloc NOW is not ready today to take over the government, even if only partially. It is a party that simply doesn’t want to take the power”, Ciurea stated during a talk show on Prime TV.

Constitutional law expert Vitalie Catană thinks NOW just doesn’t have anything to put on the negotiating table, as they appear disoriented after their initial plan failed. “There is still hope there are people among them who will either be able to convince the others or come forward on their own and make their voices heard”, says Catană.

Journalist Ion Mischevca says the bloc’s indecision about going with either one or two parliamentary groups will come with an electoral penalty in the local elections, coupled with the fact that it made “unachievable promises” during the past campaign. “They promised to prepare the application to join the European Union by 2023, and this appears unachievable once they don’t participate in the government and refuse any such talks. They basically remain in the street, with the same protester attitude”.

Mihail Lașcu, president of the Labor Unions Federation Sindlex, suggests that Maia Sandu should step out of Andrei Năstase’s shadow and lead her party in an independent manner. Mihai Lașcu also said that civil society representatives and commentators will continue to be closely watching the majority formation talks. “We are interested in having a functional Government, in having a social dialog partner and in seeing the completion of the ongoing programs, and a final adoption for the social bills approved in a first reading”, stated Lașcu.
