Coalition for the Defense of Family and Morality announces mass protests
Representatives of the Coalition for the Defense of Family and Morality have announced they will organize mass protests if the phrase ‘sexual orientation’ is not removed from the draft law on antidiscrimination, Info-Prim Neo reports.
The announcement was made on July 8 at a news conference held after no agreement over the given request was reached with the Ministry of Justice.
According to the priest of the Evangelic church “Saint Trinity” in Chisinau, Vasile Filat, the representatives of the Ministry of Justice argued that the international legislation requires such a phrase, but said yet that the Coalition’s request will be further examined so that a compromise solution is proposed in two-three weeks.
Vasile Ciobanu, priest of the Moldovan Metropolitan Church, said that the given law undermines the morality and the Orthodox society that is hundreds of years old and represents an attack on the institution of the family. If the family becomes separated, the same will happen to the whole society, priest Vasile Ciobanu considers.
Cezar Salahor, priest of the Bessarabian Metropolitan Church, believes that any law that is not based on morality is inefficient because it should maintain a balance in the society.
The representatives of the Orthodox Church say that they don’t understand what the phrase ‘sexual orientation’ means. According to them, not only the homosexuals and lesbians can be considered with sexual orientation, but also the pedophiles, zoophiles or other persons with similar inclinations.
Priest Vasile Filat considers that the sexual diversity is not a genetic, but a mental illness. He says that the sexual minorities should manifest their sentiments in private, without asking for a law that would permit creating families between persons of the same sex.
The conference organizers said that about 15,000 signatures showing the society’s attitude towards this issue had been collected during the “No to Homosexuality in Moldova” campaign. The signatures have been submitted to the Ministry of Justice.
The Coalition believes that the sexual minorities in Moldova will not enjoy equal rights and treatment in the political, economic, social and cultural spheres if the phrase “sexual orientation” is removed.
The Coalition for the Defense of Family and Morality was set up after the events of May 11, when the sexual minorities intended to organize the march “All Different, All Equal” in Chisinau for the first time. The Coalition now includes about 15 associations, church representatives and private individuals.
