Coalition 2009 asks prosecutor general to be impartial and responsible

The Civic Coalition for Free and Fair Elections – Coalition 2009 is calling on Moldova’s Prosecutor General Valeriu Gurbulea to be impartial and responsible, Info-Prim Neo reports. Coalition 2009 asks the prosecutor general to take into consideration the tragic events that happened in the post-electoral period and the mutual public accusations made by the political forces of Moldova in connection with those events. The call was made after the TV channel NIT on June 5 broadcast a documentary titled “Attack on Moldova” in which the prosecutor general speaks about the consequences of the April events. The documentary was then broadcast by other media outlets. In a press release, the Coalition says it is concerned that the telephone conversations could be tapped and used later for political purposes by the ruling party, and that the presumption of innocence is not observed in the legal cases opened over the April 6-8 events. It asks the Prosecutor General’s Office to treat these cases with responsibility and impartially. Coalition 2009 calls on the Prosecutor General’s Office to make sure that its activity is legal and impartial so as to reestablish the people’s trust in the supremacy of the law and the independence of justice, which are essential preconditions for holding free and fair elections. Coalition 2009 is a voluntary union of Moldovan NGOs that aim to contribute to free, fair, transparent and democratic elections for the Parliament. It continues the activities promoting free and fair elections initiated by Coalition 2005 and Coalition 2007 and has over 70 NGO members.
