Co-rapporteurs of PACE Monitoring Committee on visit to Moldova

The co-rapporteurs of the Monitoring Committee of the Parliamentary Assembly of the Council of Europe (PACE) Valentina Leskaj and Ögmundur Jonásson are paying a fact-finding visit to Moldova on June 27-29, IPN reports.

According to the Parliament’s press office, the goal of the MEPs’ visit is to collect information about the recent political developments in Moldova, including the preparations for the October 30 presidential elections.

The agenda of the visit includes meetings with President Nicolae Timofti, Speaker of Parliament Andrian Candu and Prime Minister Pavel Filip. The PACE co-rapporteurs will also discuss with Deputy Speaker Liliana Palihovici, members of Moldova’s delegation to the PACE and the leaders of the parliamentary parties – president of honor of the Democratic Party Dumitru Diacov, leader of the Liberal Party Mihai Ghimpu, leader of the Party of Socialists Igor Dodon, chairman of the Party of Communists Vladimir Voronin and leader of the Liberal Democratic Party Viorel Cibotaru.

The MEPs will also meet with Minister of Justice Vladimir Cebotari, Minister of the Interior Alexandru Jizdan, Deputy Prime Minister for Reintegration Gheorghe Balan, representatives of the Prosecutor General’s Office and the People’s Ombudsperson as well as with representatives of the diplomatic corps, civil society and extraparliamentary parties.

On June 28, the PACE co-rapporteurs will pay a visit to Tiraspol to discuss with representatives of the Transnistrian administration and civil society.
