The Liberal councilors’ proposal to declare 2018 the Year of Union Centenary in Chisinau didn’t garner sufficient votes in the Chisinau Municipal Council and triggered harsh replies, IPN reports.

Presenting the bill in the CMC, councilor Ion Cebanu said the union centenary is a symbolical event for all the Romanians. On this occasion, different cultural events that do not imply additional costs can be staged. The initiative obtained all the necessary appraisals.

The issue was included in the agenda of the February 7 meeting of the CMC by the votes of 22 of the 43 councilors attending the meeting, but was supported by only 17 councilors, 16 of whom were Liberal ones.

“Such a vote was anticipated. We regret several moments. The councilors of the PPEM tried to play a game. They voted for including the issue in the agenda, but fled the hall when this was put to the vote,” stated Ion Cebanu. “I expected this from the Socialists as these are liars and traitors and from the Communists, who are Bolsheviks, but not from the rest. Shame on you,” said the Liberal councilor.

The Socialists and the Communists advised the Liberals to focus on the problems of the residents of Chisinau and to give up promoting political projects that have nothing to do with the development of the capital city. Socialist councilor Ion Ceban said that during two years the Socialist group raised no subject related to politics or geopolitics. “Let’s leave the subjects of this type aside and let’s vote important projects for the municipality. If you provoke me, Mister Cebanu, I will propose that you should make a union with the Prosecutor’s Office for the illegalities committed until now,” he stated.

Unaffiliated councilor Ion Stefanita said the Liberal councilors should do reforms that would bring the union closer and should not make statements only.
