The Chisinau Municipal Council (CMC) on October 9 decided to earmark 300,000 lei for neutering 1,000 stray dogs in the capital city. The money will be allocated from the resources received from privatization, Info-Prim Neo reports. The pilot-project will be coordinated by the State Veterinary Service. Attending the Council’s meeting, the head of the Sate Veterinary Service of Chisinau municipality Radu Mudreac said that the Motorsanitation Division will collect the stray dogs from the street and take them to the city’s necropolis. From there, the dogs that will not suffer from serious illnesses will be distributed to private clinics for sterilization. Mudreac said yet that the private clinics have reduced capacities as they are usually situated in the basements of apartment buildings and have only three-four rooms at the disposal. After operated on, the animals will be taken to a place for healing, but the official did not specify to what place. Valentina Dudnic, the president of the Chisinau Association for the Protection of Stray Animals, told the municipal councilors that the State Veterinary Service does not want to deal with this problem and suggests taking the animals to the necropolis, where there are no conditions for neutering the dogs. “Animals from all over Moldova, infected with different diseases, are taken there. There is no electricity and water,” the quoted source said. Dudnic expressed her indignation at the fact that the project is not well-planned. She said that in Chisinau there are 8,000 stray dogs and not 30,000 as the municipal authorities say. “The figure is raised so as to get more money,” she said.
