CMC adopts transport strategy for 2014-2025

The Chisinau Municipal Council (CMC) has adopted the transport strategy for 2014-2025. The document envisions the renovation of the road infrastructure, introduction of the e-ticketing system, equipment of the public units of transport with GPS systems and renewal of the buses and trolleybuses, IPN reports.

In the October 21 meeting of the CMC, acting head of the Pubic Transport and Communications Division Igor Gamretski said the strategy must be implemented over the next ten years. Its cost is €220 million. The adoption of the strategy is a condition imposed by the European Bank for Reconstruction and Development when the financing for the municipal project to purchase and assemble new trolleybuses was negotiated.

The strategy was adopted as a result of heated debates. Communist councilor Victor Gurau and other members of the CMC accused Mayor General of Chisinau Dorin Chirtoaca and Igor Gamretski of lack of transparency, traffic of influence and favoring of Liberal councilor Iurie Topala, who started to manage bus route No. 23, which is one of the most profitable routes in Chisinau.

The CMC voted to set up a supervisory council that will monitor the implementation of the strategy. The council will consist of seven councilors, namely Victor Gurau, Gheorghe Necoara, and Mihail Garev of the Communist faction, Oleg Cernei and Ion Stratulat of the Liberal faction, Igor Calin of the Liberal Reformist Party, and Gennady Ivashchenko of the Liberal Democratic Party.
