Climate change resilience measures to be taken in Ramsar Site “Lower Nistru”

Climate change resilience and institutional development measures will be taken in the Ramsar Site “Lower Nistru” until 2021 within a project that was launched at the Ministry of Agriculture, Regional Development and Environment on March 29, 2018. The project will support the creation of a state-protected natural area called “National Park “Lower Nistru”, IPN reports.

Minister Liviu Volconovici said the Ministry is ready to provide methodological support within this project. “The environmental problems were and remain key ones for the Ministry of Agriculture, Regional Development and Environment,” he stated.

Attending the event, Head of the EU Delegation to Moldova Peter Michalko said the European Union supports the promotion of the idea of supplying the population with water. The continuation of the dialogue on the subject with the parents is thus important.

The Ramsar Site “Lower Nistru” in 2003 was recognized as humid area of international importance of the Ramsar Convention. This is situated in southeastern Moldova, mainly on the territory of the districts of Causeni and Stefan-Voda and partially Slobozia, which is on the left side of the Nistru. The Ramsar Site “Lower Nistru” is unique by its diversity of plants and animals.

The project covers 13 communities, namely: Tudora, Plop-Stiubei, Rascaieti, Gradinita, Olanesti, Talmaza, Cioburciu, Popeasca, Copanca, Palanca, Carnateni, Purcari, and Crocmaz. It is designed to support the creation of the “National Park “Lower Nistru” and to increase the people’s interest in the development possibilities in the area.

Within the project, the inhabitants of five villages will benefit from works to improve the water supply systems, while sections on both sides of the Nistru River will be planted with trees. Towards the end of the project, the people living in the region will be aware of the importance of conserving biodiversity and will be able to benefit from the economic opportunities offered by the Ramsar Site “Lower Nistru”, such as eco-tourism, organic agriculture and business.
