A hot day is expected today, May 2, in Moldova’s Parliament. According to the announcements made earlier, the legislative body will examine the reports of the two special commissions constituted last week – for examining the impact of the law on the modification of the electoral system and for studying the circumstances in which the prosecutor general was appointed to the post, IPN reports.
The first commission was created following the appearance of circumstances pointing to the infringement of the rights of large categories of voters as a result of modifying the country’s electoral system, including the people from the eastern region of the country that is controlled by an unrecognized regime and the Moldovans from abroad. In the case of the prosecutor general, some of the lawmakers argued that a lower number of votes were given for Corneliu Gurin than the officially announced figure.
A number of politicians and experts consider that the two legislative acts will be reviewed following the misunderstandings that appeared as regards the formation of a new parliamentary majority for installing the new Government. A radical change in the negotiating process was caused by the Constitutional Court decision according to which the head of state violated the constitutional norms when he nominated the Liberal-Democratic leader for premiership. The decision was taken shortly after the PLDM and PDM agreed the new ruling accord that allegedly envisioned the adoption of the law on the new electoral system and the naming of the new prosecutor general.
In a TV program last week, the head of the Liberal-Democratic parliamentary group Valeriu Strelet said that the special parliamentary commission of inquiry into the situation at Banca de Economii will make public its conclusions soon. He also said: “We’ll see if the Liberal Party head Mihai Ghimpu has the courage to apologize after making groundless accusations against the leader of the PLDM Vlad Filat concerning Banca de Economii”.
