Civilian advisory mission under EU auspices to be deployed in Moldova

A civilian advisory mission under the auspices of the EU’s Common Security and Defense Policy is expected to be deployed in the Republic of Moldova. The mission is to be approved and launched in the near future. This was discussed by Nicu Popescu, Moldova’s Deputy Prime Minister/Minister of Foreign Affairs and European Integration, and Josep Borrell, EU’s High Representative for Foreign Affairs and Security policy, during the former’s visit to Brussels.

The officials discussed the deepening of cooperation between Moldova and the European Union in the field of security, the European course of the Republic of Moldova and the progress achieved in the implementation of the nine recommendations of the European Commission.

Nicu Popescu handed over the contribution of the Republic of Moldova to the 2023 EU Enlargement Report to Gert-Jan Koopman, Director-General for Neighborhood and Enlargement Negotiations (NEAR).

Both with Jan Koopman and with NEAR Deputy Director Katarína Mathernová, Popescu discussed the EU assistance and the commitment of the Republic of Moldova to continue the implementation of the reform agenda, so that accession negotiations can be initiated in as shortly as possible.

The European path of the Republic of Moldova was also discussed with MEP Siegfried Muresan. Nicu Popescu welcomed the recent resolution of the European Parliament requesting the start of accession negotiations by the end of this year.

Nicu Popescu assured his interlocutors that Moldova is determined to work quickly on the reform agenda and to advance on the path of EU accession.
