The head of the Civil Status Service in Varnița has been arrested for allegedly scheming together with one of her subordinates and two other private individuals to make illegal money on the side issuing civil certificates.

The Anti-Corruption Prosecutor’s Office said in a press release that the private intermediaries had the role of seeking beneficiaries, while the two civil servants issued certificates for undue fees and in violation of procedure.

Last week the prosecutors searched the offices, the homes and the cars of the people involved, and seized cash and incriminating records to serve as evidence in the criminal case.

The service head has been put under house arrest for 30 days, her subordinate is under preventive arrest, as is one of the intermediaries, and the second intermediary has been released for now
