Local nongovernmental organizations will be soon able to take part in a contest where they will express opinions and propose solutions for ensuring road safety in the country, Info-Prim Neo reports. The proposal to hold such a contest was submitted by representatives of civil society in response to the Traffic Police Division's call to develop a sustainable partnership as regards traffic security between the governmental sector and the nongovernmental sector. In a joint meeting on March 17, Sergiu Armasu, head of the Traffic Police Division, said the police and civil society should establish efficient communication and cooperation so as to improve the situation as regards road accidents. Among the proposed objectives are to combat corruption and to identify solutions to deal with the negative traffic phenomena, said Sergiu Armasu, adding that today's meeting will be followed by more meetings centering on traffic-related problems. The meeting discussed a number of problems faced by the traffic police and the people. It was stressed that the 2,921 road accidents that happened last year resulted in 452 deaths and 3,735 persons injured. Sergiu Neicovcen, head of the Contact Center, said civil society can contribute to the implementation of a number of awareness raising activities through volunteers. He also said that modest funds should be allocated for supporting the related activities of the NGOs and working out certain programs. Elena Burca, chairwoman of the Forum of Women's Organizations, said the organization is ready to cooperate, but there should be drawn up a cooperation contract and formulated a plan of action. According to her, the tasks of every party involved should be well defined. Thirty-nine persons were killed and 396 injured in the 322 traffic accidents that occurred in Moldova so far this year.
