Civil society launches Initiative For a Responsible Government

A gropup of opinion leaders are worried about the political situation in the country and launched the Initiative For a Responsible Government, which demands speeding up the formation of the new government and the improvement of the quality of governance.

Arcadie Barbarosie, one of the signers and director of the Institute of Public Policies, told a press conference at IPN that the goal of the initiative is to generate public reactions to the events of major importance for Moldova. According to the analyst, the way the electoral campaign unfolded and the result of the November 30 ballot proved that Moldovan society is in a state of confusion and there are legitimate doubts about the functioning of the rule of law in the country. “We think that the current situation requires the initiation and continuation of a straightforward dialogue with the parliamentary parties in order to prevent them from making the same mistakes again and to overcome the current alienation between the political class and voters”, said Arcadie Barbarosie.

Another signer of the initiative is Igor Botan, head of the Association for Participatory Democracy (ADEPT), who explained that the initiative group wants a stable and responsible government, especially after the experience of the past 5 years, when the high expectations weren't met and the voters' disappointment was expressed through a low turnout and a civic attitude punishing the political class. “We don't want these things to happen again in our society. At the moment, we don't know what's happening in the negotiation process and we are concerned about it. I think our concerns are also based on the experience of the 2010 negotiations”, said Igor Botan.

Political analyst Oazu Nantoi, who joined the initiative as well, criticized the politicians for using the voters in the electoral campaign and then turning their backs on the people. Viorel Cibotaru, head of the European Institute of Political Studies in Moldova, said that the political parties negotiating the new government coalition should accept to meet with the representatives of the initiative in order to clarify how the new coalition will be formed.

The Initiative For a Responsible Government was signed by Arcadie Barbarosie, Igor Botan, Oazu Nantoi, Vasile Botnaru, Alexandru Cantir, Viorel Cibotaru and Anatol Golea. The initiative is an informal open civic platform and anyone interested can join it at www.ipp.md.
