The Communist Party itself is to blame for the defeat of its candidate for Chisinau Mayor, as the campaign staff made many mistakes in promoting Igor Dodon's image, think the members of the the Civil Society Congress. Fiodor Ghelici, the organization's leader, who also ran independently for a city councilman's seat, told a press conference on Thursday that Igor Dodon displayed a too self-confident behavior ahead of the run-off. “Playing the winner's role before the win is what did him a bad turn”, said Ghelici. Ghelici said that he, together with a group of other independent candidates, attempted on several occasions to meet with Igor Dodon to tell him what they though about the problems of the city, but the Communist candidate refused every time. On the other hand, Liberal Dorin Chirtoaca accepted the invitation. Moreover, it was decided that a consulting council would be created to advise the Mayor, composed of independent candidates and representatives of parties that didn't clear the electoral threshold. Ghelici also spoke about other mistakes that, the Civil Society Congress thought, the Communist candidate made. Among them are the failure to participate in many election debates he was invited to join and, of course, the scandal around Anatolie Tofan, who was said to have been convicted of raping and murdering a girl. “It is not something new that the PCRM is divided into two factions. And Igor Dodon was exposed in this campaign to attacks from Communist members themselves”, said Fiodor Ghelici. He went on to add that the PCRM shouldn't have reacted “hysterically” to the outcome of the mayoral elections, because the party's observers had all the means to notify electoral bureaus in case violations were observed during the voting process and during the votes' counting.
