Civil society calls on administration of Gagauzia to adopt experts’ draft Electoral Code

Civil society organizations made a call to the People’s Assembly of Gagauzia, asking adopting the draft Electoral Code of the region, based on the bill formulated recently by a working group consisting of representatives of civil society and Gagauz deputies. The NGOs say the elections for the Governor of Gagauzia are approaching and the legislation in the field must be adjusted so as to increase the people’s confidence in this process, IPN reports.

According to the NGOs, the Electoral Code of Gagauzia, drafted by experts and deputies of the People’s Assembly, is an alternative to the Electoral Code drafted by the legal commission of the Assembly, which was passed in the first reading.

After the Gagauz Youth Center “Piligrim-Demo” analyzed the Electoral Code of the legal commission, it established that this Code runs counter to the constitutional norms of Moldova, the international standards on elections, etc. Therefore, an alternative bill was formulated.

The civil society organizations hope that on August 4, when the standing commission of the People’s Assembly will examine the bill drafted under the aegis of “Piligrim-Demo”, a decision will be taken to correctly reform the electoral system by debating both of the bills in the plenary meetings of the Assembly, so as to show that the authorities of Gagauzia act in accordance with the international law and by respecting the rule of law.

The statement was signed by “Piligrim-Demo”, the European Center “Pro-Europa” of Comrat, the Center “Contact”, the Independent Press Association and the Public Policy Institute.
