Civil society asks adopting law to ensure respect for rights of animals

Representatives of civil society called on the authorities and society to prevent the inhuman treatment against animals. In a news conference they asked drafting a law on animals’ rights and ensuring the observance of these rights at the same level as the human rights, IPN reports.

Sabina Barsan, volunteer of the Association “Alga”, said that the animal protection associations made a similar call to the Chisinau City Hall on March 30, but all in vain. The volunteers collected over 400 signatures by which they want to draw attention to the problem of animals without masters.

“Mayor Dorin Chirtoaca promised to solve this problem during the election campaign. But the number of poisoned animals increases. We demand that the use of torture against animals be stopped and that a law on the protection of all animals be adopted,” stated Sabina Barsan.

Cristina Lesanu, representative of the Youth League for Animal Rights “Vita”, said the civil society members urge the authorities to open talks on the adoption of the Universal Declaration of Animal Rights, which says that the animals have the same rights as the humans. This is very important in a civilized state.

“A sum of 2 million lei is allocated annually for sterilizing stray dogs, but this is not done. There should be more animal shelters for neutered dogs so that they do not remain in the street,” said Cristina Lesanu. She added that the poisoned animals die in agony. At the same time, the poison poses a threat to children who come into contact with the animals.
