Civil Aviation Authority director suspended

The director of the Civil Aviation Authority Iurie Armasu was suspended from post for the period of the investigation, IPN reports, quoting a decision approved by the Government. Armasu is suspected of causing damage of almost 1 million lei to the state budget by abuse of power.

It was established that public servants of the Authority on February 17 converted 3 million lei from the institution’s account into euros, which then cost 28 lei per euro. On May 6, the prosecution body of the National Anticorruption Center ordered that the Financial Inspectorate should carry out a search at the Civil Aviation Authority. The damage caused to the state due to the difference in the exchange rates was estimated at over 800,000 lei.

The director faces 6 to 10 years in jail and a ban on holding particular posts or performing particular activities for a period of 10 to 15 years.
